Wang Chao-chun, the beautiful daughter of a humble scholar, was presented to the emperor by her father, who hoped for a better life for his daughter as an Imperial Consort.  However, when the Imperial Court saw her exquisite beauty, they asked her to make the supreme sacrifice: to become the peace offering to the barbarian king of the North.  She consented, and because of her selflessness, there was peace between the two kingdoms throughout her lifetime.
