Courage and Devotion
The Year of the Ram

Caroline Young

This visually stunning masterpiece, created by Caroline Young, a recognized master of color and composition on silk, was inspired by the Year of the Ram, portraying those who are strong-willed, affectionate, caring, trusting, and with a talent for the artistic.

Hua Mu-Lan was the beautiful daughter of a Chinese general. He had no sons, so he taught Mu-Lan all he knew about martial arts and warfare strategies. When the Emperor called upon the general to lead the troops into battle, he was unable to go because of a failing health. Being the devoted and dutiful daughter that we was, Mu-Lan disguised herself as a man and took her father’s place on the battlefield. She won all the battles, and was awarded the rank of general.

While the ware raged on, she fell in love with a fellow officer. He had no idea she was a woman. After the war was over, he came to visit his "comrade in arms," and she revealed her true identity to him. Her goodness and beauty were irresistible and he fell in love with her. They were married and lived to a ripe, old age.
